Curtis spoke his first words today!!! Yes, you heard correctly. Curtis said something. It was the most amazing and unexpected moment. I had been sitting with Curtis for a while and had begun to ask him questions in the hope of getting some yes/no nods or shaking of the head. Curtis responded to some of the questions I was asking and some he did not. At one point in the ‘conversation’ I just looked at him and said how much I missed hearing his voice and his opinion. There was a pause and some silence when all of a sudden I was sure I heard him say something whispery and raspy. I really thought I had imagined it but asked Curtis anyway “did you say something?”. I put my ear to his mouth to listen more carefully and sure enough I heard a similar raspy sound that had the cadence of a phrase...it sounded to me like he was trying to say something but I couldn’t tell what. I was so happy just to hear that incomprehensible sound that I looked at Curtis and said “I’m so sorry I don’t know what you are saying but I am just happy that you are saying it”. I then said “do you know how much I love you ?” Curtis responded by saying “how much ?” He said “how much ?!!!” No doubt about it. Those 2 words were not loud but they were clear (although a little raspy.)
Curtis is working so hard and making such brilliant progress. He is coming back to us step-by-step and so much sooner that we ever expected. I can’t wait to hear what he has to say next !
Thank you for the positive thoughts, prayers and support and I hope to one day meet all of you who have been keeping the distant candles burning for Curtis. He is our miracle ! He is back with us !

This is great news for all of us back in Texas praying and carefully keeping tabs on Curt. I have missed his voice and friendship so much and am happy to see his progress. Tell him we miss him and love him. Also tell him I can't wait to see him. Keep up the good work.

Elaine, thanks for the post and the pictures. I was there literally just a few minutes before you showed up. He must have waited for me to leave to start talking. That is great news, though.
I stumbled on this quote today looking as I am getting ready to go to Mississippi to meet up with my family. My grandma died yesterday and her husband, my grandpa, died two weeks ago. Rough time for my mom right now. Please share it with Linda and Curt...
"A woman who lives with chronic pain said to my mom the other day, You can't sit around and wait for the storm to be over. You've got to learn how to dance in the rain."
I found it on this blog...

Elaine,
Thanks for sharing this beautiful moment in the journey of Curtis' recovery. Just the day before at my visit, we were talking about what his first words would be....
Can't wait to hear what he'll say next!
Love and Blessings to both of you,
Dorine
