Day's report June26

Today we all spent time by Curtis's side for his comfort and to let him know that we are there for him. He outwardly looks a little better today since some of the swelling around his eyes and nose has decreased. However he is still unconscious and on a sedative and pain drip. He is on 100%ventilation still and the MD did try him out a few times today to reduce the ventilator to see if he would breathe on his own. He has not done that yet but since he is still sedated it does not mean anything bad except it is just not time yet for him to be breathing on his own.

The surgery went as planned and his abdominal area is closed with no complications, so that is great. Tomorrow they plan to run an eeg to check for seizure activity and hopefully find out more for us about his brain activity. He will also be started on intravenous nutrition since his metabolic needs are increased in this time of trauma and healing. We will be able to meet w/ the neuro doctor to find out more in the morning.

Curtis had several encouragements for us today: he did squeeze several hands throughout our visits and had leg and foot movements too. While the doctors may say this is a reflexive movement, the optimist in all of us know that it is Curt's way of saying..."I'm here."

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers,
Renee

Renee, my son Jeff Gartrell, was a high school friend of Curtis. As you may remember, Jeff was in a car accident in 1992, seven days before graduation. He sustained a severe head injury as well as several other injuries. I know the difficult road you are traveling, and I will keep you in my prayers. Please call if I can share any information with you.254 396 7496

This is a quote from Jeff: "Curtis, I know how hard it is because I have been there, but I know you can do it. Hang in there."
