There are many good things to report to you guys! Curt is continuing to make progress in several different areas. His swallowing has improved much, and last week had a swallow study. The therapist decided that Curt swallowed well enough to move him to eating chopped foods (he previously was on pureed foods) and now his meals have more solid foods. They are chopped small, but look really good and Curt says everything is delicious. He has a super appetite and always appreciates the meals he has, plus asks frequently for snacks in between. Since he has much room for weight gain, they are allowing him any snacks he can safely eat whenever he wants them. So far, he has gained back 15 pounds!

The swallow test did show that when he swallows thin runny liquids, he can aspirate a little bit. So for now, we are having to thicken his liquids until he is more safely swallowing them. We are hoping that he will soon have his g-tube removed since it is no longer being used!

I did get to see a couple of his PT sessions. His therapists are working on his coordination and balance in walking. So he's been on a treadmill several times to practice walking. In addition, on Friday, he walked through the room and down the hall and back to the room without a walker and without holding onto anything! I was so completely happy to see him do this! His therapist only assisted by standing behind Curt to brace him if he leaned backwards. With instruction from the therapist, Curt was able to correct his backwards-leaning by using his stomach muscles to pull himself upright again.

During Saturday's PT session, there was a 5K going on at Rancho. So Curt's therapist brought him outside to participate and do his therapy there. We went to the start of the event and lined up with other participants. Then when the event began, the therapist had Curt stand up and walk down the street to be a part of it all! It was really great to see him walking freely on the street without even using a walker! And, Curtis received a participant's metal for being in the event!
